The Byrd-class galactic survey cruiser (also called exploratory cruiser) was a type of starship on active duty in Starfleet during at least the late 23rd and early 24th centuries. (Task Force Games: Star Fleet Battles) Byrds were intended for long-range research and reconnaissance missions into uncharted regions. The class had more labs and shuttles than the cruisers, and in addition, had considerable cargo storage space. During wartime, the Byrds were converted into light carriers.
