Fort Custer was the name of at least two U.S. Army bases. One base was located in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was named in honor of George Armstrong Custer, who along with his superior, General John Pope, put down the Mormon Uprising of 1881. Even though Pope was actually in command, the fort was named for Custer because he was one of the few U.S. heroes of the Second Mexican War, and was the most visibly successful general of the Great War.
