Ireland gained independence from the United Kingdom after the Great War. Although a poor and struggling nation at first, it began to recover and built infrastructure. However, in 1939 the nation was invaded very quickly by the United Kingdom, sparking the Second World War. Irish citizens faced genocide from the British regime. It was in 1942 that French-funded soldiers managed to rise up against the retreating British troops, occupying Northern Ireland as well.
