Ebenezer was the son of a farmer, and quit school in the third grade. He saw a city for the first time at age 17. He did not like the city. He was an adept fisherman, and knew a great deal about fishing, although the books he read seemed to be of no use. He there befriended Laura Ingalls, who helped him change his cold heart.
