Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) is a herbaceous annual plant whose seeds are used as a spice. Cumin seeds are used in Middle Eastern, Indian, North African, Mexican, Chinese, and ancient Roman cuisine. It is an ingredient in curry powder and chili powder. Cumin is native to the eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and India. In Medieval European lore, cumin was believed to keep lovers and small farm animals (e.g. chickens) from wandering away. Cumin is often confused with caraway, but can be distinguished by its hotter taste. Cumin Custard would be a custard dessert flavored with cumin.
