The East Regional of the NCAA Tournament has been held every year since 1992, when the NCAA chose to move all tournament games to neutral sites. From 1992 to 2002, the East Regional advanced two teams to the Frozen Four, as did the West Regional counterpart. Six teams played at the regional, with the top two seeds awarded byes to the quarterfinal round of the tournament, playing the winner of the first day's games. In 2003, the NCAA Tournament was expanded to 16 teams playing in 4 regionals, and a regional champion has been attained every year since then.
