The Lord Commander is the elected leader of the Night's Watch. He is traditionally chosen by a vote among the black brothers, and leads until he can no longer perform the job, due to death, illness, or old age. When the series begins, Jeor Mormont served as Lord Commander, but he eventually dies at Craster's Keep and is replaced by Jon Snow in A Storm of Swords.
