The two nations became divided after World War II, when Germany, and the city of Berlin was invaded by American, British, French and Soviet forces. The Soviets quickly began to claim their territories as a Socialist satellite state, which neither of the democratic western powers agreed with. Finally, the German Democratic Republic was formed in 1949. The city of Berlin got divided into two halves, East Berlin becoming the capital of the GDR. In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built, physically dividing the two countries, and two parts of the city from each other. The same year, US President Orson Welles visited West Berlin, and made his famous speech, regarding his sympathy towards it's people and the democratic West Germany.
