Over the years, it became the received wisdom that Reuben was responsible for the deaths; an old keeper at his end, driven mad by desperation. His ghostly voice haunted the lighthouse until May 1969, when it finally manifested to Jennie Rudge first, and latterly to others including Anne Travers and Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart.
