The "science v. faith" theme may be reflected in the factions of the Others. The DHARMA Initiative may have been the "Science" group that came into conflict with the pre-existing "Faith" group. Benjamin Linus switched sides from Science/DHARMA to Faith/Others. Note also that Jacob is very anti-science/technology.
