The Armed Forces of the United Federation of Planets encompasses the Federation Starfleet, Federation Marine Corps and Federation Starfighter Corps. The military was formed after the Dominion War after the uppermost echelons of the Federation leadership realized that an exploration first, defense second Starfleet could not continue to protect the Federation sufficiently in the face of new threats. Thus, the Marine and Starfighter Corps were formed, each with specialized roles within the military. Starfleet's vessel focus turned towards more heavily-armed vessels such as the Prometheus-class, though new classes such as the Remington-class continued the scientific role. (Star Trek: Remington)
