Iuchi Rei was a shugenja of the Unicorn Clan and sensei of the Floating Leaf Dojo, where she spent most of her life as student, guard, and later as a sensei. Rei was the protegee of the Iuchi Daimyo Iuchi Yue, who was nominally the Master Sensei of the dojo. They kept in contact through a meishodo amulet. Yue trusted Rei to handle all aspects of the school in her usual absences.
