John Bamford was the husband of Weatherfield Recorder secretary Janet Bamford. Because of John's disability, Janet only worked mornings at the Recorder and in 1988 she had to turn down overtime to care for John when he was confined to bed. Nick Cavanagh saw this as a problem and convinced Ken Barlow to sack Janet so that they could hire someone who could be in the office all day.
