Chester Arthur becomes president in 1885 and then seeks the Republican nomination in 1886. His opponent Grover Cleveland defeated him. However, President Arthur would die in November only a few weeks after his defeat, and in the interim the presidency passed to Secretary of State Robert Todd Lincoln.
