The enjoining spell is a ritual which calls upon the spirit of the First Slayer to combine the essences and abilities of several individuals into a vessel or the "hand". After this spell was performed, Buffy possessed enhanced Slayer powers, Willow's magic, Giles' knowledge of foreign languages, and Xander's strength. Her eyes and voice were altered as well.
