Shafiq Hatim Zaman (26 October 1800, Amasya, Ottoman Empire - 24 April 1891, Constantinople, Ottoman Empire) was an Ottoman Field Marshall. The chief of staff of the Ottoman Navy for thirty years, he is regarded as one of the great strategists of the latter 19th century, and the creator of a new, more modern method of directing armies in the field. He is often referred to as Zaman the Elder to distinguish him from his nephew Shafiq Hatim Ali Zaman ibn Emmadi, who commanded the Ottoman Army at the outbreak of World War I.
