An imager was a device similar in nature to a camera used for multiple purposes. Planetary imagers were placed in orbit and capable of imaging any part of a given planet. For example, terraforming missions utilized them. (TNG: "Home Soil" ) After retrieving a list of Bajoran names from a wall panel in the old chemist's shop aboard Deep Space 9, Quark told his brother Rom to fetch an imager so he could copy the list. However, Quark was shot and the list stolen. (DS9: "Necessary Evil") It is unclear whether "imager" was a slang term for a pre-existing piece of Treknology.
