Fraying of Jigoku was a Mastery 6 earth spell which allowed the shugenja to cause a gash to rend open in the earth, that would spout forth noxious fumes which incapacitated or even killed anyone nearby. To activate this spell, the shugenja must have a small bit of silk rope or cord, and must tear it apart as he called for the Earth spirits to do his bidding.
