Vinnie was a drayman for Newton & Ridley who made a morning delivery to the Rovers Return Inn together with his older colleague Ernie. Bet Lynch, newly appointed as landlady, stood and watched them closely. Vinnie told Ernie it was because she fancied them while the older man said that she was snooping. Bet put them right: she was "getting to know them" in case there was trouble with them in the future and then she could sort it out face-to-face rather than troubling the brewery.
