In a trade that surprised many, the Canadiens traded Jaroslav Halak to the St. Louis Blues for two prospects. The trade was attributed to the fact that Halak, along with Carey Price, was to become a restricted free agent. The Canadiens did not want pay two goalies the salary of a 'number one' goalkeeper. To replace Halak, the Canadiens signed free agent Alex Auld.
