Zaretti was a private investigator for the stars. Detective Rodriguez uncovered footage of Zaretti and Ella Simms outside of Coal on the night of the murder of Sydney Andrews. Ella had hired Zaretti to find out if Sydney was trying to ruin her life, but when he went to the Melrose Place Apartment Complex that night, he found Sydney's dead body floating in the pool. Zaretti met with Ella, but told police that Ella had tried to frame him and had murdered Sydney herself.
