The NCAA Division I Independents are schools that do not have a conference affiliation. New Jersey Tech instituted a move up to Division I from Division II, a process that was completed by the 2009-10 season. They spent a few seasons as an independent before joining the Great West Conference. Savannah State and North Carolina Central will join the MEAC, Savannah State this fall, and NC Central already a kind-of member that is still transitioning from Division II. New Orleans, a former Sun Belt Conference member, is transitioning down to Division II for the 2011-2012 season.
