The Imperial Nationalists were a radical faction of the Imperial Remnant intent on restoring the Galactic Empire and upholding Emperor Palpatine's vision for the galaxy. It was formed by Vladimir Makarov, a captain of the Imperial Army, in 37 ABY. Many others joined his faction, about two thirds of the Remnant. Jagged Fel then formed the Imperial Loyalists out of the remaining third, fighting with the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances during the four year Imperial Crisis. Initially, much of the galaxy was conquered by the Nationalists in a surprise attack following a series of terrorist attacks carried out by the Imperial Intelligence faction of the Nationalists, though their movement grew weaker over time and was defeated in 41 ABY.
