Hidan was a member of Akatsuki and the partner of Kakuzu. He was eventually blown to bits and lets to rot away in a pit by Shikamaru Nara. Only to be revived by Dosu Kinuta via the reanimation jutsu. He was given two choices he could serve the new Sound Village as a member of the new Sound Five or he could serve unwillingly and have his personality suppressed given his options Hidan agreed to join Dosu's cause under the condition that he could kill Shikamaru Nara one day.
