Initially known as Gwardia Katowice from 1953 to 1956, the club frequently played in the Polska Liga Hokejowa from 1953 to 1987. They finished as the league's runner-up on two occasions In the years where they didn't play in the PLH, Bydgoszcz participated in the second-level Polish 2. Liga. They won the 2. Liga three times. Bydgoszcz also fielded a junior team, which won the Polish Junior Championship in 1966. It also finished second in 1973. The club became independent from the sports club in 1992 and re-branded itself as BTH Bydgoszcz. The independent team folded in 2003.
