Kelman's first professional makeup job came when he was only sixteen years old, working as a makeup effects assistant on the television series Monsters. Afterward, he attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he majored in film production and from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1995.
