Hirazuri-daiko was a thin, barrel-shaped drum, suspended on a stand. Accompanied by the flute it was used in kabuki and noh theatre to create various sounds effects to enhance the play. The sounds mixed together gave a sense of foreboding to the scenes, an effect especially appropriated for ghosts appearing on the stage.
