On 22 January 1969, a Soviet Army deserter, Viktor Ilyin opened fire on a motorcade carrying then Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. This timeline assumes the attacker succeeded in shooting the General Secretary who died two days later in hospital. In his place took over Alexei Kosygin who successfully implemented the economic reform program that decentralized Soviet industry and prevented stagnation during the 70's. After nearly a century of its foundation the red flag of the union still trembles, mightier than ever.
