The black tome of Alsophocus is a random artifact, a book that may be read — at the cost of incurring corruption — to learn a random spell. Or, alternately, if the player chooses not to read it, they are still incurring corruption just by virtue of proximity, since it contains the essence of Chaos and Corruption.
