The Latvian 1. Līga was established for the 2014-15 season as the second-tier of ice hockey in Latvia below the Latvian Hockey League. It was formed to fill the void of the Latvian U20 League. The teams were primarily composed of players 20 and under but older players as well as some under 18s also participated. Previously, a second-level league known as the Pirma Liga had been contested.
