The gun is hidden inside a barcode scanner, presumably allowing Casey to carry it around without being noticed. Lifting the top of the scanner reveals the gun inside, and a notch cut in the front of the scanner allows the gun to be fired without lifting the top, thus preserving its hidden status. It was seemingly retired after the one use.
