Hurricane Nina was the fourteenth named storm, eighth hurricane, and fourth major hurricane of the 1980 Planet Ceres Atlantic hurricane season. The last storm of the season to reach hurricane strength, Nina was a powerful Category 4 hurricane with winds of 135 mph at peak intensity. Although Nina weakened to a Category 3 hurricane before coming ashore Haiti in early November, the hurricane still delivered catastrophic damage. Over all, Nina was responsible for 1,200, and possibly upwards of 1,700 to 1,800, deaths, and $1.2 billion (1980 USD) in damage.
