"We're all adults" is a silencing tactic frequently employed to shut down calls for codes of conduct or other formalizations of community expectations. The implication behind "we're all adults" is that all adults automatically know how to treat other people, particularly people different from themselves, respectfully. There is a great deal of evidence to the contrary.
