A deviced made by Bernard D. H. Tellegen, who revealed his ideas for it in the year 1948 as a possible fifth linear element. A gyrator is an electric circuit that introduces a phase shift of 180° in one direction, but none in the opposite direction. In electronics, it is used to reduce the cost and size of closed-circuit systems, such as in telephones.
