ETV, or expect table variance/variation, is a warning in Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder communities to indicate low confidence that game masters will allow a given strategy. ETV warnings are common online, where players from different groups share strategies, but cannot be assured that other game masters won't design adventures, interpret rules, or adopt house rules to limit or forbid strategies. An ETV strategy that so distorts a rule that it no longer resembles its plain reading may be considered a bag of rats, unlikely to be allowed by any game master.
