The virgin banes are creatures from folklore said to be very bad omens. The cows from a few villages in the vicinity of Aldersberg were said to have suddenly started to squirt blood from their udders when milked and virgin banes were seen in the morning mist. It's uncertain whether these are the same creatures as "regular" banes, but both are described as bothersome virgins.
