The deportations and massive massacres of the period of about 1,500,000 Armenians. Armenian side and the majority of scholars refer to this period as the Armenian Genocide, while Ottoman and Turkish sources refer to it as the insurgency against the Ottoman Empire with the goal of establishing first Armenian Republic on the Ottoman Armenian territory.
