West of Porirua's CBD is a hill, or the remains of one. Beginning in 1971, much of that hill was removed and deposited in the south-west corner of the harbour, where it now supports a MegaCentre and the Whitireia Polytechnic. The purpose of the earthmoving was Todd Park, originally a motor assembly plant. As Nevil Gibson said in the National Business Review (Feb 24, 2006): * The creation of Porirua's Todd Park by New Zealand's richest family, the Todds, in its day was an achievement unrivalled in New Zealand history.
