Spells cast without the aid of a wand is considered Wandless magic. It takes a disciplined witch or wizard to effectively use it, as this type of magic tends to be volatile. Sometimes, specific hand gestures focus the power of the spell and guide it to the target. Wandless magic is also more difficult than using a wand and more tiring - so the more difficult the spell, the harder it is to cast without a wand.
