The unnamed mother of Rick and Rio is a character exclusive to the 2003 anime (although she is referred to by Rick in the manga and 2009 anime) who was living in Ishval with her sons. During the Ishval Civil War, their house was attacked by the Amestrian State Military and she ran away seemingly ignoring the boys, only to get killed in an explosion. She left behind a locket that Rick kept treasuring the memories of his mother, while Rio, who saw her run away, believed that she had abandoned them. Later, when the locket was damaged and opened, some eye medicine was found inside (along with a photo of the boys with their mother), and it was revealed that she suffered from an eye disease which didn't let her see her children when the house was attacked, prompting her to run into their room to
