Shihei was an ashigaru in the Daidoji armies who retired as a monk. In time he became the chief caretaker of Benten Seido, and many believed he was a former bushi of a Great Clan. The tale amused Shisei, so as an entertaining game he claimed that Benten granted him a special blessing, to be bestowed only upon the acolyte who could guess his former name and station.
