Her past experiences have led Renarr to seek escape as a camp whore in her adopted father's Legion. For this she is scorned and a rift has come into existence between her and Urusander. As she makes her way through the camp to the Legion Commander's tent, she notes how tensed and excited everyone is for the impending first battle against Lord Ilgast Rend's Wardens; the first meeting against the two sides in the Civil War. Inside the tent, she encounters Lieutenant Serap and Urusander, but is ignored by the latter who departs without saying a word to her.
