The wild lands in the northern portion of Erene has always been a place of dread for civilized peoples, even before the Kingdoms War turned it into the place of terror it is today. It was here that the Shadow first entered the world, taking as its vessel the elven monk Hitomi. It is also believed that it is still the location of the corrupted Spirit Tree that was twisted by efforts to access extra-planar elements.
