When a green comet destroys Superman’s powers, the former Man of Steel selects Ar-Ual, a Kandorian he enlarges with a duplicate of Green Lantern’s ring, to take his place as the new Superman. But Ar-Val proves to be egotistical and glory-hungry, and refuses to go after an escaped Brainiac and Luthor. Thus, Clark Kent is temporarily given the powers of three Legionnaires and Elastic Lad and becomes the Old Superman, but his new powers are not up to the test of capturing the two villains. Ar-Val’s life is saved by the Old Superman, almost at the cost of the latter’s life. In gratitude, Ar-Val transfers his powers to the Old Superman, but is turned into unliving stone as a result.
