The Alpha Lanterns take down the Green Lanterns by draining their rings. The Guardians of the Universe monitor the situation, ominously plotting toward their own goals. The Alpha Lanterns close in on John Stewart and Guy Gardner and fire on them but then find out they were chasing constructs made as a diversion. Beneath Oa, John finally wakes up and punches Guy in the jaw. Guy and John explore the tunnels under Oa and see a large quantity of power rings which should be looking for new recruits but they seem to just be buzzing around in the same spot. Upon further examination, they find some of the Guardians' secret projects and abandoned experiments. John gets the idea to use the Guardians' old mistakes to their own advantage.
