Miss Violet de Merville was a society lady. She was the daughter of General de Merville, who distinguished himself in the Afghan War. She became engaged to the Austrian baron Adelbert Gruner, a man of bad reputation. An unnamed client hired Sherlock Holmes to break up the engagement, and the attempt is chronicled in "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client".
