Frattin was raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He played junior hockey for the Fort Saskatchewan Traders of the AJHL during the 2006–07 season. After playing junior hockey in Alberta he was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 4th round (99th overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He then enrolled in the University of North Dakota in 2007. Matt Frattin was traded to the Los Angeles Kings on June 23rd, 2013 in a deal with Goaltender Ben Scrivens and a 2nd round pick in the 2014 draft for Jonathan Bernier.
