West Elgin was created in 1998 through the amalgamation of Aldborough Township and West Lorne. For several years afterward, there were two separate fire departments, each with their own chief - the Rodney Fire Department and West Lorne Fire Department. In 2016, West Elgin council voted to amalgamate both fire departments under a single chief.
