In 948(195) a Senator by the name Caricvs Tiberivs, from Greece was recognised as the Senate’s most intelligent and decisive politician. He was given the Caesarship by the Senate and was approved by the Praetorians. Caricus had a policy of bringing back the Senate more permanently to the Empire and gave Sardinia, Corsica, Alpes Poeniae; Cottiae; and Maritimae, 3 remaining Gauls, and Hispania Terraconensis all Senatorial seats over his 40 year rule. Caricvs had good publicity with the people, although the Praetorians sometimes disagreed with his decisions. After the mess of Commodvs, the Senate made it illegal to appoint a direct relative to the Cæsarship. And successors were deemed to be chosen by the Senate.
