The seeds can be planted nearly everywhere, barring certain tiles such as banks. Within around 30 seconds the seed will grow into a Novtumber Festival plant. From this plant the player can harvest either a Novtumber Festival produce or, rarely, a Novtumber Festival perfect produce. Both types of produce can either be offered to the gods for Prayer XP or returned to the earth for Farming XP. If left unharvested for too long, the plant dies, which causes the message "One of your Novtumber Festival plants dies before you can harvest it."
